First things first, what is Inktober?
The tradition of dedicating October to the Inktober Challenge started in 2009.
Every year, artists around the world attempt to recreate one prompt a day in ink, everyday, all through the month of October (Inktober Classic). There is also, however, a version of Inktober where artists attempt one prompt per week for a whole year (Inktober 52). The artist, Jake Parker, created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. Since then, Inktober has given artists everywhere the opportunity to be consistent and to practice and share their progress in a community.
At DIY.org, we host our own version of Inktober for artists between the ages of 7 and 15. Since DIY is a kid-safe, COPPA compliant alternative to social media for adults, it offers young artists a bully-free, moderated environment to celebrate Inktober with a community of kids from over 170 countries around the world!

When does Inktober begin?
Inktober 2022 will begin on the 1st of October, 2022 and go on until the 31st of October, 2022.
What are this year’s Inktober prompts and where can I find them?
You can find the prompts for Inktober on their official site or you can find them on the DIY site too!
Can Inktober be digital? Does Inktober have to be ink?
Yes, of course it can be digital! Although the Inktober Challenge was originally founded to focus on traditional pen and paper inking, it’s not that rigid anymore. Digital art responses are totally cool.
How do I participate in Inktober 2022?
If you’re a kid between the ages of 5 and 17, you can participate in Inktober 2022 by joining the vast community of creative kids on DIY! There are two ways you can go about it:
- You can create a free DIY account that will give you access to see the prompts and also see what other kid artists like yourself are sharing as responses on DIY.
- If you want to share your creations on DIY, you can upgrade to DIY Plus. This will give you access to your own cool digital portfolio where you can upload and display all your creative projects as images or videos!
In summation, Inktober is all about developing your skills, practicing, and being consistent. All this made more fun and easy when you’re doing it together with fellow artists from around the world!
