It’s in the nature of kids for them to be curious, imaginative, and creative about how they perceive and comprehend the world around them. In their quest to figure the world and its details, scribbling or doodling can be a great form of transforming perception into skill by using drawing as a form of expression. Probably, we often see the most basic forms of drawings emerge from shapes and stick figures, and that is just the beginning of what a child can achieve!

Art is a wonderful way of letting a child develop their creativity and probably, even embark on a journey of art. If your kid wants to get started with drawing but doesn’t know where to begin, here are 5 ways to get started with step-step drawing – easy and fun!

We also have an exclusive course on drawing, don’t forget to check it out here.

#1. Find an image and trace its shapes

Let’s start with the basics and make it simple. Choose any sort of photographic image to begin. Start by drawing right on the image or put a piece of tracing paper over it. Pay attention to the basic shapes you see and outline them with a marker and go along making your first piece of art. If you need to follow along, check the video for it here.

#2. Combine 3D shapes to make an object

Once you practice the above a few times and feel confident about moving to the next level, practice drawing 3D shapes and then combine them to make an object eventually. Pay attention to edges and how space interacts in your drawing. Think about cubes, cylinders, and pyramids for starters and try to apply that on paper. If you need a video tutorial to follow along, check this out!

#3. Draw a round object with shadows

Next up, understanding and playing with shadows and light can make all the difference to a drawing. This will also help kids to understand depth and texture better, especially with the first strokes of basic sketching. To begin, find a simple round object, like an egg or a basketball, and set up a direct light source. Draw the object and add the shadows you see. Pro tip: Light source is the key. Strong and direct light on your object will make it easier to see shadows.

#4. Draw a flower

Great job! You did great, if you made it this far, let’s start by venturing into drawing real figures and things around you. To draw a flower, start with a sketch of your flower’s basic shapes and then add details and shading. Try a poppy if you want, or find a new flower to draw. Meanwhile, think of various drawing ideas that you can try for your next drawing experiment!

#5. Drawing an animal

Awesome! You’re almost there. Now, all you need is more practice. Drawing animals can be the most rewarding thing ever, especially if you have a pet of your own. Let’s try drawing a dog this time. Think about all its doggy details like fur and whiskers and start by drawing its shape first and then adding details as you go along. Reference a photo or a live dog if needed.
